"When using a 'snake' roller it can be difficult to make clay snakes of a consistent thickness. Perhaps I was not too good at it, but mine invariably used to end up with one end thinner than the other and I could not easily match a thickness next time if needed. My solution is to use spacer slats (or playing cards) to help. Place the desired size of slats under the snake roller and on either side of the clay. Roll the clay in the usual way until the roller rests on the slats. Roll like that until you are happy with the snake. The slats could be started thick and be reduced in size if you like, or roll without the slats until you are nearing the desired thickness then use the slats to finish off. The thickness will be consistent along the length of the snake, and can be accurately repeated."
